On March 19, 1919, the Feast of St. Joseph, Anna was born in Rankin, PA. Concerned that she would not live, the doctor sent her father for the priest and she was baptized over the kitchen sink the same day. Surprising to everyone, Anna went on to live a very long, joyous, and faith-filled life. She grew up with her parents, Barbara and Peter, and her two sisters. Sweeping out the chicken coop and helping her mom in the kitchen were two of her favorite memories of growing up. She graduated from Rankin High School early and was offered a full scholarship to the University of Pittsburgh, which she turned down to take a job and help her family during the Depression. Anna had nothing but love for her family. Her patience, kindness and humility were beyond measure. She always had a God-given gift for music. Without ever having a lesson and well into her later years, she enjoyed sitting down and playing her favorite Croatian songs on the piano from memory. She proudly passed on her Croatian customs and traditions to her family. She took great joy in baking, cooking and homemaking. Anna endured several health difficulties, including colon cancer, each with faith, patience and positivity. After each battle, she would always say, ‘God didn’t take me because I guess my work is not yet finished.’ Anna’s work here on Earth finished twelve days shy of her 102nd birthday when she peacefully fell asleep. The genuine love and devotion she gave to her family is the hallmark of her life. Now, we are lovingly called to continue her humble work.
