Dr. Barrett M. “Barry” Bender
Of Wilkins Twp. and Tampa, FL, age 72, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 1, 2023. Proud father of Jonathan Bender of New Jersey and Jamie Sedlak (Jay) of Wilkins Twp. Brother of Irene Maginas (Spero) and Fr. Christopher Bender (Dr. Filitsa). Barry was born in Pittsburgh on December 22, 1950, to Harry and Mary (Pascal) Bender. He grew up on Beulah Road in Penn Hills and as a child he enjoyed traveling to Asbury Park, NJ, to spend time with his many cousins. He became an Eagle Scout and member of the Boy Scouts honor society, the Order of the Arrow. Barry received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh and graduated from the Pitt Dental School in 1976. After graduation he co-founded the group practice Nova Dental Associates and helped to elevate and expand the group through marketing. He worked in their Forest Hills office until his retirement in 2011. For a brief time he hosted a New Kensington radio broadcast teaching about dentistry. He was on the board of directors of the Western PA Dental Society for 12 years. Barry was an avid golfer and long time member of Longue Vue Club where he got 2 holes-in-one. He enjoyed playing the keyboard for entertainment at church Christmas parties.
Friends and family will be received at Wolfe Memorial, LLC, Forest Hills Chapel, 3600 Greensburg Pike, Pittsburgh PA 15221, on Wednesday, October 4, from 2-4 and 6-8pm. Additional visitation will be held at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 419 S. Dithridge Street, Pittsburgh PA 15213, on Thursday from 10am until the time of the funeral service at 11am, officiated by Fr. Christopher Bender. Burial in Homewood Cemetery.
