Age 96, of Wilkins Township, formerly of Forest Hills, passed away on Monday, November 8, 2021, at West Haven Nursing Home in Apollo. He was the lifetime companion of the late Catherine Shea, and is survived by cousins, extended family, and many friends. After high school, Fred enlisted in the Air Force and served as a radio operator during bombing raids over Japan in World War II. After returning home, he earned a degree in chemical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh and secured a job at Westinghouse where he spent his career until retirement in 1987.
Fred was a member of the American Society for Testing & Materials (ASTM) for more than 40 years and was awarded the ASTM Award of Merit for his service. The Fred F. Weingruber Award was created in his honor to recognize distinguished contributions to the specifications committee for engineering and structural fasteners.
Fred began his stalwart support of the Swanson School of Engineering with a major gift to the school's endowment and later established the Fred F. Weingruber Engineering Legacy Fund to help support the changing needs of the school. In the midst of the transformation of Benedum Hall, he invested additional funds to help all Pitt engineering students, who will benefit from the Fred F. Weingruber Classroom on the ground floor.
Friends received at Wolfe Memorial, LLC, Forest Hills Chapel, 3604 Greensburg Pike, Pittsburgh PA 15221, on Thursday from 1-3 and 5-7pm. Funeral service at Forest Hills Presbyterian Church, 1840 Ardmore Boulevard, Pittsburgh PA 15221, on Friday at 11:00am, followed by burial in William Penn Memorial Cemetery, Churchill.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Forest Hills Presbyterian Church, where Fred was a lifetime member.
