Lucille Vagnucci Obituary

After months of suffering, Lucille (Consiglio) Vagnucci passed away peacefully on May 6th. Lucille was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1934. Raised by immigrant parents from Sicily, a book editor/jeweler and seamstress, Lucille was a popular and outspoken child and a caring older sister to her brother, Michael Angelo (8 years her junior). She was a devout Catholic who revered the priests and nuns of the church and, in her youth, aspired one day to become a nun herself. While teaching in the New York City public school system, she pursued her passion for learning by working towards her PhD at Fordham University. It was during that time that a childhood friend introduced her to the love of her life, Anthony, a recent immigrant and doctor from a small town in central Italy. After a lavish wedding at the Plaza Hotel in New York, they built a life together, moving from New York City to Boston, and finally settling in Pittsburgh. They had three children together: Anthony, Missy, and R Michael. Lucille dedicated herself to them every waking moment of her day. When she was not preparing meals for them, she was volunteering at their schools and helping them with their schoolwork. She continued her devotion to the Catholic Church throughout her life, bringing the kids to mass every Sunday, and becoming close friends to the local pastor, Father Erkens, who she helped care for until he passed. Even after her children grew up and moved out, she continued to devote her life to them, always letting them know (with calls or care packages) that they were in her thoughts. When her children began to have kids of their own, she showed the same level of devotion and love to her 8 grandchildren, who called her “Nunny” for her continued devotion to the church. She took great joy in being an active part of their lives, especially her daughter’s children who lived nearby. She was a constant, loving presence in her husband’s life as well, caring for him until his passing in 2012. In the last several years, she lived with her daughter and remained deeply involved in her family’s daily life. Lucille is survived by her brother, Michael “Buzzy” (Barbara), her son Anthony (Anjali), daughter Missy (Bernie), and son Michael (Traci), along with 8 beautiful grandchildren.

A memorial service to honor Lucille’s life will be held at a later date.
