Richard (Dick) L. Kerchner, 84, died on Friday, December 25, 2020. Dick was the quintessential gentleman but one who had high expectations of himself and others. He loved horseback riding, his dogs, and getting breakfast at Drews with his friends. Most of all he loved his family, his friends and neighbors, and the kids with whom he worked. Dick grew up in Wilkinsburg and stayed in Pittsburgh until the day he died.
After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh with a Masters in psychiatric social work, he spent his entire career providing services to emotionally disturbed children who were unable to attend public school. This work culminated in a private school/partial hospital, Craig House, recognized statewide as a model program where he was the Administrator from 1977 until retirement.
Dick was predeceased by his father, George L. Kerchner, and mother, Jeanette A. Given, and his sisters, Vivian Kerchner and Shirley Kerchner. He is survived by his cousin William J. Lehm and family of Virginia Beach, and his goddaughter Sarah Johnson (Gregg) and her family Ben, Alyse, and Grace.
Due to current Covid restrictions, only a private ceremony will be held at this time with private entombment in Homewood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Second United Presbyterian Church, 300 Hay St., Wilkinsburg PA 15221, or Light of Life Rescue Mission, 913 Western Ave., Pittsburgh PA 15233.
