Formerly of St. Albans, NY, age 74, Sterling Robert Hardy, Jr. sadly succumbed to chronic illness on Wednesday, March 24, 2021, at UPMC Shadyside Hospital.
Born in Manhattan, NY, Robert (as he was affectionately known) was the only son and middle child of three. After graduating from high school, Robert went on to pursue his education at the University of Pittsburgh where he met his bride to be. Having earned a Masters degree from Columbia University, Robert had a lengthy career in education, but not before serving a stint in the United States Air Force. Through his military travels & educational background, Robert became proficient in several languages.
Robert was the loving father of three daughters. He spent their early years devoted to ensuring they were both well-educated and culturally diverse. He could often be found accompanying his “3 Js” to Paulson swimming pool, practicing flash cards, or trips to the drive-in movie theater. Robert was both well respected & loved in the Lincoln-Lemington community. A man of “wisdom”, “kind”, a “fun-loving yet gentle soul” was how he was often described; character traits which he attributed to his Muslim faith.
Robert was preceded in death by his father, Sterling R. Hardy, Sr. He is survived by his mother, Ella Marie (Washington) Hardy; three daughters, Jauneline H. Hardy-Yancey (Malik), Joyline Hardy, and Jimmaline Hardy from his former marriage to Jauneline (Hester) Hardy; two sisters, Shirley Adams (Larry) and Peggy Hardy; grandchildren: Darienne Robinson (Davine), David Geddie, and Joshua Ajayi; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Visitation will be held at Wolfe Memorial, LLC, Forest Hills Chapel, 3604 Greensburg Pike, Pittsburgh PA 15221, on Sunday, March 28th, 2021, from 1-4pm with final services being arranged by J. Foster Phillips Funeral Home, Inc., Jamaica, NY.
