Skip Gillis was called home from his residence, Longwood at Oakmont, Monday evening December 23, 2024, by his Lord Jesus. This ended a 5 month battle against a glioblastoma.
Born Gaylord Sibley Gillis in Detroit, MI, on January 27, 1941, to Mr. and Mrs. Gaylord Wilson Gillis, he grew up in the home of George and Marguerite Long near Bristol, PA, along the Delaware River. This is how and where he acquired the name Skip. He was a graduate of Albright College and Princeton Theological Seminary. He pastored churches in Greenville, PA, Elizabeth, and Sheraden, from where he retired in 2001, part of PCUSA and Pittsburgh Presbytery.
He was proceeded in death by first wife Grace in 1998. He is survived by his loving wife The Rev. Catherine "Cathy" Gillis who met and wed Skip in 2001. Her children Tim Mallick (Kristen) and Andrew Mallick both of Mars, PA, called their stepdad "Skip" and their children, Tyler, Jacob, Cole, Garrett, and Hannah call him "Grandpa Skip". He was pleased to have step-grandchildren Victoria, Ryan, and Reagan, and the late David.
He is also survived by sisters Bonnie Dugan of Pittsboro, NC, Sibley Classen (Ward) of Ruxton, MD, and foster sisters Jane Krittman of Princeton, NJ, and Mary Knight (Ken) of Calabash, NC, who called him every night for 5 months of his illness.
His burial in the cemetery at Beulah Presbyterian Church, his home church, will be private with a memorial service in springtime--a time to rejoice in the resurrection of Jesus Christ who gave life eternal to his faithful servant Gaylord "Skip" Gillis. Friends are invited to attend the memorial service at Beulah Presbyterian Church, 2500 McCrady Road, Pittsburgh PA 15235, on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at 11:00am.
